Quick answer
Choose Watermelon Wiggle for kids ages 2 and up who enjoy fruity flavors, and Wicked Cool! Mild Mint for older kids ready to transition from fruit to a more grown-up mint taste.
Why flavor matters in kids toothpaste
Getting kids to brush willingly often comes down to taste. A flavor they enjoy can turn a nightly battle into a habit. Tom's of Maine offers two fluoride toothpaste options that cater to different stages of childhood taste preferences: Watermelon Wiggle and Wicked Cool! Mild Mint.
Both toothpastes provide cavity protection with fluoride, so the main difference is the flavor profile and the age group they're designed for. Understanding these differences helps you pick the one that your child will actually look forward to using.
The trade-off: fruity fun vs. minty maturity
Watermelon Wiggle combines watermelon and bubble gum flavors, making brushing feel like a treat. This can be a great motivator for younger children who are just learning to brush. However, some kids may eventually outgrow fruity flavors and want something that feels more 'grown-up.'
Wicked Cool! Mild Mint offers a natural mint taste that is less intense than adult toothpaste. It's designed for kids who are too old for fruity flavors but not ready for the strong kick of regular mint. The trade-off is that mint can be a harder sell for younger kids who prefer sweet flavors.
Mild mint vs. fruit: how to choose
- If your child loves sweet flavors: Choose Watermelon Wiggle. The watermelon-bubble gum blend is appealing to younger kids and makes brushing feel like a treat. Offer it as a reward for brushing to reinforce the habit.
- If your child is outgrowing fruit flavors: Choose Wicked Cool! Mild Mint. It provides a natural mint taste that's milder than adult toothpaste, easing the transition. Let your child pick the flavor at the store to increase buy-in.
- If your child is sensitive to strong mint: Start with Watermelon Wiggle and gradually introduce Wicked Cool! Mild Mint. The mild mint is less intense but still a change from fruit. Mix a tiny amount of mint with the fruit toothpaste initially, then increase the ratio.
